How Much Does Solar Cost After Incentives?

It’s a common question that people who are interested in solar panels ask, particularly knowing the value of incentives through the years: how much does solar cost? The short answer: For many Illinois homeowners, solar incentives can reduce the cost of a residential system by thousands of dollars. However, the final price depends on the size of the system, your utility provider, available state incentives and how those incentives are structured in your contract.

That means there isn’t one “after-incentive” price that applies to every home. A trustworthy solar estimate should show you the full system price, each incentive you may qualify for and what you will actually be responsible for paying.

Here’s what Central Illinois homeowners need to know.

How Much Does Solar Cost Before Incentives?

Solar systems are generally priced according to their size, which is measured in kilowatts. The right size for your home depends largely on:

  • Your annual electricity use
  • The available space and sunlight on your roof or property
  • Shading from trees or nearby structures
  • Your goals for reducing grid electricity use
  • Whether you plan to add a battery, electric vehicle or other electrical equipment

As of August 2026, the average installed price of residential solar in Illinois is approximately $3 per watt. At that rate, a 10-kilowatt system would cost around $30,000 before incentives. The average system quoted in Illinois is closer to 11.5 kilowatts and costs approximately $34,600, although actual prices vary considerably by home and project.

That initial price is only the starting point. Illinois homeowners may have several opportunities to reduce their effective cost.

Is the Federal Solar Tax Credit Still Available?

For residential systems purchased by homeowners, the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit is no longer available for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Previously, qualifying homeowners could claim a federal tax credit equal to 30% of eligible solar installation expenses. Changes to federal law ended that credit earlier than originally planned. Homeowners who had qualifying systems installed by the end of 2025 may still be able to claim the credit, subject to IRS rules.

The rules can be different for leased systems or power purchase agreements because those systems are generally owned by a commercial entity. Always ask who owns the equipment, who receives each incentive and how that value is reflected in your agreement.

How Does Illinois Shines Reduce the Cost of Solar?

Although the residential federal tax credit has ended, Illinois continues to support solar through state-funded programs that operate independently of federal incentives.

The primary program available to many homeowners is Illinois Shines. Rather than offering a standard tax credit, Illinois Shines provides incentives by purchasing the Renewable Energy Credits, or RECs, associated with qualified solar projects.

A REC represents the environmental value of the renewable electricity your system is expected to produce. The Illinois Shines payment goes to an Approved Vendor and may be passed along to you in several ways, including:

  • A reduction in the upfront system price
  • A payment after the project reaches designated milestones
  • A credit incorporated into the financing agreement
  • Another arrangement explained in your contract and Disclosure Form

REC values vary based on the system’s size, location, project category and current program pricing. Your proposal should clearly state the estimated Illinois Shines incentive, who receives it and when or how you receive its value.

What Is the Smart Inverter Rebate?

Eligible Ameren and ComEd customers may also qualify for a distributed generation rebate, commonly called the smart inverter rebate.

As of 2026, qualifying residential and small commercial solar projects can receive $300 per kilowatt of installed solar capacity. For example:

  • An 8-kilowatt system could qualify for $2,400.
  • A 10-kilowatt system could qualify for $3,000.
  • A 12-kilowatt system could qualify for $3,600.

An additional rebate may be available for qualifying battery storage at $300 per kilowatt-hour of nameplate capacity. These rebates are separate from Illinois Shines.

Accepting a utility rebate may also come with rate, net-metering or battery-program requirements. That is why it is important to evaluate the long-term value of the rebate instead of looking only at the upfront amount.

What Could Solar Cost After Illinois Incentives?

What About Illinois Solar for All?

Income-eligible households may qualify for additional savings through Illinois Solar for All. The program is designed to expand access to solar for income-eligible households and communities while requiring participants to receive defined economic benefits.

If you may qualify, this program could significantly change the cost of going solar. Eligibility, project availability and participation requirements should be reviewed before signing a standard solar agreement.

Incentives Are Only Part of the Solar Equation

The lowest installation price does not always provide the best long-term value. Your solar proposal should also explain:

  • Estimated annual energy production
  • Expected electricity-bill savings
  • Panel and inverter warranties
  • Workmanship and roof-penetration coverage
  • Financing costs and dealer fees
  • Expected panel degradation
  • Net-metering assumptions
  • Maintenance and service responsibilities
  • Who receives each rebate or incentive

Illinois customers who interconnect new systems generally receive supply and transmission credits—not full retail credits—for excess electricity sent to the grid. Solar can still reduce utility costs by supplying electricity directly to your home and earning credits for eligible excess production, but those savings should be calculated using current utility policies.
